Dutch M-form and tax returns for expats

Moving to the Netherlands, or leaving? Then you'll have to deal with the M-form: an extensive Dutch tax return that often raises more questions than it answers. I prepare it carefully for you and explain every step in plain English.

What is the M-form?

One tax return, two situations.

The M-form (M-biljet) is the Dutch income tax return for the year you move to or leave the Netherlands. For part of that year you are a Dutch resident, for the other part you are not. The form covers both periods โ€” and that is exactly what makes it complex.

โœ“
Two periods in one returnYour income and assets before and after your moving date are assessed separately.
โœ“
Income from several countriesSalary, pension or other foreign income, without paying tax twice.
โœ“
Assets and your homeSavings, investments and a home in the Netherlands or abroad (box 1 and box 3).
โœ“
Partner and tax creditsThe right choices on tax partnership and credits in the year you move.
GOOD TO KNOW

When you move, the wage tax withheld often does not match your actual situation. A correctly completed M-form may lead to a refund.

Filing late or incompletely, on the other hand, can result in a penalty or an incorrect assessment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the M-form

When do I need to file an M-form?

For the year you move to the Netherlands or leave it. In later years you file a regular return as a resident, or a non-resident return (C-form) if you live abroad but still have Dutch income.

How do I get the M-form?

You can file the M return online with the Dutch tax office (Belastingdienst) or request a paper form. I prepare the return for you and make sure it is filed correctly and on time.

What is the deadline?

The deadline is stated in the invitation from the Belastingdienst. If you cannot meet it, an extension can be requested. I keep track of the deadline for you.

What information do I need?

Among other things: your date of arrival or departure, annual income statements from employers in the Netherlands and abroad, bank and investment balances, details of a home you own and, if applicable, of your partner. After our introduction you receive a personal checklist.

Can I get money back?

That happens regularly, for example because the wage tax withheld does not match your actual situation in the year you moved. A carefully completed M-form makes sure you get what you are entitled to.

Do you also speak Dutch?

Yes, of course. See the Dutch version of this page.
